NOTE: As of May 13, 2017, Google maps is not providing accurate directions to the reserve despite the reopening of Highway 130. You should stay on Highway 130 (Mt Hamilton Rd.) all the way to the address above. Then enter the gate and proceed on the dirt road to the research station. Routes utilizing Sierra Rd. or departing Highway 130 before reaching this address will not connect.
From the South: Take Highway 101 north to 680 north, and take the Alum Rock Avenue exit. Proceed east on Alum Rock Rd to Highway 130, the Mt Hamilton Road, and turn right. Continue up Mt Hamilton Road for 6.7 miles until you see two metal gates on the left and a large rusty barn off in the field. The street address is 16070 Mt Hamilton Rd. The first gate is a pedestrian entrance for Joseph Grant Park, and the yellow and blue gate just past the Grant Park gate is our entrance. If you reach the intersection of Quimby Rd. and Mt Hamilton Rd., you have gone too far.
From Berkeley and points north: Find your way to Highway 880 south, and continue to Warren Ave./ Mission Blvd/262 exit to Highway 680 south. Drive south towards San Jose on 680 for several miles and exit at Alum Rock Avenue. Turn left, heading east towards the hills, and proceed through the small business zone followed by a residential area where the road narrows to two lanes. Watch for the right-hand merging turn onto Highway 130, and take the Mt Hamilton Road.
Once you have arrived at our entrance gate, use the gate combination given to you in advance, proceed on the gravel road past the old Washburn Barn for 1.5 miles until you reach a second locked electric gate that's next to a windmill with 2 water tanks. The same gate combination applies, but add the # sign after the four numbers. Continue for 2 miles until you reach the Cedar Barn. All visitors must check in as soon as they arrive.
The following live Google Map widget will navigate you to the front gate at 16070 Mt Hamilton Rd. as well.
